Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate students and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.

Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
The Summer 2025 Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) provides eligible students with up to $3,500 stipend and $5,000 in tuition during the Summer 2025 semester for funding intermediate and/or intensive study of Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, or Uzbek domestically or abroad.
AY 25-26 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
Academic Year (AY) Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) provides eligible
undergraduates with a a $5,000 living stipend and up to $10,000 in tuition and fees. Eligible AY
graduate students are awarded a $20,000 living stipend and up to $18,000 in tuition and fees.
Undergraduate and graduate FLAS Fellowships are available for students studying the following
languages at the intermediate or advanced level: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian
(BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian,
or Uzbek. Graduates students may study at a beginner level IF they have demonstrated advanced
proficiency in another language related to field of study.

Eligibility criteria
1. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, National, or Permanent Resident.
2. Applicants must be a degree-seeking student in good standing at Arizona State University (ASU) or have been accepted as a degree-seeking student at ASU.
3. Applicant must be eligible to receive an Arizona State University tuition scholarship.
4. AY applicants must be prepared to enroll in at least one Russian, Eurasian, or East European area studies course for the Fall and Spring Semester. (Not applicable for Summer applicants.)
5. Applicants must be prepared to enroll in the one of the following languages: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, or Uzbek.
6. Applicants must have a 3.0 minimum GPA and a demonstrated interest in Central and/or Eastern Europe. Applicants with less than a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply and address their GPA in the Statement of Purpose.
7. Students wishing to be considered under the competitive preference category of financial need should submit their entire FAFSA form. All eligible students will be considered, regardless of need.
8. Applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
9. Applicants from all majors are encouraged to apply.

FLAS awards are contingent upon funding from the U.S. Department of Education
