Honors Credit for Major Fellowships

Honors credit

Barrett, The Honors College recognizes that participation in nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships can provide transformative academic and personal experiences aligned with the values of honors education. To acknowledge the rigor and significance of these programs, eligible Barrett students may petition to have a portion of fellowship-related academic credit designated as honors credit.

Eligible Programs

This policy applies to academic credit earned through major national or international fellowships that include a substantial academic, research, or language study component.

Examples include, but are not limited to…

  • Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
  • Boren Scholarship
  • Killam Fellowship

Additional programs may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by Barrett, The Honors College.

Honors Credit Award

  • Students may apply up to 12 credit hours of fellowship-related academic credit toward the honors credit requirement for Barrett graduation.
  • Only academic credit formally awarded and recorded on the ASU transcript is eligible.
  • Honors designation is contingent upon successful completion of the fellowship and the required follow-up activities outlined below.

Procedures

  • Pre-Approval: Before beginning the fellowship, students must contact Dr. Kyle Mox to indicate their intent to apply fellowship credit toward honors requirements.
  • Completion Verification: Upon return, students must submit documentation verifying successful completion of the fellowship and the awarding of academic credit (e.g., transcript, program certificate, or official letter).
  • Reflective Component: Within one semester of completing the fellowship, students must complete a reflective exercise connecting the experience to their honors education and long-term academic or professional goals.
  • Community Engagement: Students are also expected to participate in Barrett and/or ONSA outreach activities (such as information sessions or panels) and to provide a testimonial for use in fellowship advising and promotion.

Approval and Recordkeeping

Final approval for awarding honors credit is determined by the Office of National Scholarships Advisement in consultation with Barrett advising staff. Upon approval, the credit will be designated as honors credit on the student’s degree record.
